The Origin Story
Most cabinetmakers buy lumber from a dealer who buys it from a broker who buys it from a mill. Each step in that chain adds cost, removes accountability, and introduces quality variability that ends up in the finished cabinet.
Dan Craig Cabinetry took a different path. We own the land. We operate the sawmill. We know which trees the wood came from, how they were harvested, and how the lumber was dried. That knowledge produces a quality consistency that a broker-sourced supply chain literally cannot replicate.
The trees used are primarily storm-damaged hardwoods from our own property. Trees that would otherwise go to waste become the cabinets in your kitchen. It is a better environmental story, and it produces stronger, more character-rich wood than commercial clear-cutting.
Our Hardwoods
White Oak, Walnut, and Hard Maple are the three primary hardwoods sourced and milled at our Wisconsin property. Each brings distinct character, grain, and workability to the finished cabinet.
The most in-demand hardwood in contemporary cabinetry. White Oak delivers a tight, straight grain with warm golden-brown tones that accept both natural and stained finishes with exceptional consistency.
Rich, dark, and unmistakably premium. American Black Walnut carries deep chocolate tones with a swirling grain that makes every door panel unique. The luxury option for homeowners who want cabinetry that commands the room.
The clean, neutral canvas of cabinetry hardwoods. Hard Maple's fine, even grain and creamy white tone make it the first choice for painted finishes and for homeowners who want crisp, bright interiors that photograph beautifully.
From Tree to Cabinet Door
From harvest to cabinet shop, the material never leaves our control. Here is the journey a tree takes before it becomes a cabinet in your kitchen.
Trees are harvested from naturally fallen or storm-damaged stock only. No clear-cutting.
Logs are milled at our Wisconsin sawmill into boards to our own specification.
Lumber is kiln-dried and graded before leaving the property for the cabinet shop.
Boards are milled into parts, assembled with dovetail joinery, and finished in our shop.
Finished cabinets arrive on-site and are installed to approved drawings by our own crew.
