What You Need to Know

Engineered for Performance. Designed for Your Kitchen.

Quartz countertops are engineered from 90 to 95 percent crushed natural quartz bound with polymer resin. The result is a surface that is harder and more consistent than natural stone, non-porous by composition, and available in a far wider range of colors and patterns than quarried granite or marble.

Because quartz is non-porous, it does not require sealing, does not harbor bacteria, and resists staining from coffee, wine, oils, and acidic foods. This makes it the most practical choice for a busy kitchen and the easiest countertop material to maintain over time.

Dan Craig Cabinetry sources quartz through Cambria, Silestone, and Caesarstone, the three brands that consistently deliver the best slab consistency, color depth, and warranty coverage in the Chicago market.

Where Quartz Works Best

Where Quartz Works Best

Kitchen Perimeter Countertops

The primary application. Quartz performs better than any other surface in daily kitchen use for stain resistance, durability, and maintenance simplicity.

Kitchen Islands

Island tops frequently handle more abuse than perimeter countertops. Quartz absorbs this well. Waterfall edge islands are the most common design statement in quartz.

Bathroom Vanity Tops

Quartz handles bathroom humidity and cosmetic product exposure without staining or requiring sealing. An ideal vanity countertop in any bathroom.

Laundry Room Countertops

Chemical-resistant and easy to clean. Quartz works well as a laundry room folding surface above cabinetry.

Fireplace Surrounds and Hearths

Quartz is suitable for fireplace surrounds when not in direct contact with the firebox. Confirm heat tolerance specifications with the fabricator for this application.

Office and Desk Surfaces

Built-in desk and office surface applications where durability and consistency of appearance are priorities.

Quartz Countertops Questions.

Does quartz need to be sealed?

No. Quartz is non-porous by composition and does not require sealing at installation or at any point during its life. This is one of the primary advantages of engineered quartz over natural granite or marble, which require sealing every one to three years.

Can quartz be damaged by heat?

Quartz is heat-resistant but not heat-proof. The resin binders can be damaged by sustained direct heat above approximately 300 degrees Fahrenheit. We recommend trivets or hot pads for pots directly from the stove. Brief contact with a hot dish does not typically cause damage.

How does quartz compare to granite?

Quartz is more consistent, requires no sealing, and carries a manufacturer warranty. Granite is a natural material with unique character that engineered quartz cannot replicate. Quartz is the more practical choice; granite is preferred by homeowners who prioritize natural material authenticity.

Can I see the actual slab before it is cut?

Yes. For solid colors, a large sample is usually sufficient. For dramatic veined patterns, we strongly recommend viewing the actual slab at the fabrication showroom to confirm the veining placement matches your expectations.

Is quartz available in matte finishes?

Yes. Silestone and Caesarstone both offer honed and textured finishes in many of their color lines. Honed finishes hide fingerprints better than polished surfaces and are a popular choice for darker colors.

How long does installation take?

Digital templating takes approximately one hour on-site. Fabrication runs 10 to 14 business days. Installation is typically completed in one day for a standard kitchen.

Can quartz be repaired if chipped?

Minor edge chips can be repaired with color-matched epoxy. Significant cracking typically requires section replacement. Chips are uncommon with normal kitchen use.

Do you do standalone countertop replacement?

Yes. Countertop replacement is available without touching existing cabinetry. We template off your current cabinet tops, coordinate fabrication, and install as a standalone project.
